Reading Goals 2016

source
This year I want to make it a point to read more.
I used to read a couple books a week, easy! But then I had a kids, a busy 9-5 job and a hobby that kind of took up all my free time.

I recently finished reading Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson (a.k.a The Bloggess) and it was amazing! Having a partner who battles depression, bipolar and anxiety issues, this "funny book about horrible things" was something I needed to read and I'm happy I did! I laughed out loud more that I ever had while reading a book! Inspiring and hilarious!

However... I started it in November and only finished it this month. My goal for 2016 is to read at least 2 books per month. I stumbled across this reading challenge on Modern Mrs. Darcy that I would like to use as a incentive to be more active with my reading:

I've started reading Queen of Zombie Hearts by Gena Showalter... the third book in the White Rabbit Chronicles. This will be my "meaning to read" book that I can check off the challenge above. I enjoyed the first 2 books and I'm excited to see how this one plays out.

So, with both my goal to read 2 books a month and a reading challenge to keep me going, I think I'm off to a great start!

Some other books I currently own and hope to get to soon are:
Insurgent ("a book you previously abandoned")
The Winter Garden ("a book recommended to you by your local librarian")

These are the ones I can see on my bookshelp from where I'm sitting... I have at least a dozen more.. so who knows which one I'll grab next!

If you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments!

Three Things Thursday : My Kid Punched My Laptop

Although I didn't actually make any real ''goals'' for 2016, in the back of my mind I did *want* to get back to blogging more. And although I started off the year pretty good (3 posts since December 31st), I kind of slacked this week. And that is because a) nothing overly interesting has happened since last week and b) I lacked time and inspiration...

But then I noticed 3 of my favorite bloggers EVER started a new weekly linkup!

So even though a) nothing overly exciting has happened and b) I lack serious inspiration, I thought it would be fun to jot down a few thoughts.

1) Everything happens for a reason. I do photography on the side... and when I book a wedding I require a small deposit to hold the day (like $150)... out of the blue, I booked a July wedding this week. I was so excited to have an extra $150 this week. I've had to be strict with our budget since my husband hasn't worked in almost a year... and every penny is accounted for. I was debating about whether putting it towards my Christmas debt or maybe splurging on a little somethig for myself (new workout clothes or a haircut)... BUT, unluckily for me, that decision was made for me when I had to spend nearly $200 to get my laptop fixed. What happened to my laptop you ask? See #2...

2) Memphis uses my laptop all the time. Memphis has impulse issues (common in kids with ADHD)... and his impulsivity and aggression has been getting increasingly worse... again. His moods change rapidly, without warning, and we're dealing with more & more meltdowns. Anyways, all this to say that he was being quiet, playing a game on the laptop when he became frustrated and lashed out by throwing the mouse at the laptop screen. The screen was obviously broken. I hooked up the laptop to a extra monitor we have to make sure it worked. Thankfully, everything else was okay.
I brought the laptop into our local repair shop and had it back within a couple of hours... good as new.

3) My final thought to sum all of this up is proof that everything happens for a reason. I had the "spare" money to fix my laptop and Memphis, I hope, learned a valuable lesson about actions having consequences. He has been extremely apologetic since the "incident" and has been remarkably calm and accommodating since then as well. It's true that sometimes bad things have to happen to make people realize what they have (he would literally DIE if he couldn't use the laptop) and I have to trust that this all went down this week to help teach Memphis about working on controlling his anger.

So, that was MY week.. how was yours?

Be sure to check out Megan, Kristine & Nay for Three Things Thursday!

Christmas Day Recap

Wow... I can't believe Christmas was nearly 2 weeks ago already. It went by in a blur, for sure! (hey, that rhymes!)

We spent Christmas Eve with my husband's family and were home around 10:00. The kids were exhausted and ready for bed. It's the only night they look forward to going to bed... They reason the quicker they fall asleep, the sooner Santa comes!  So we out out some milk and cookies and put them to bed.

Tradition at our place is that Santa brings all the gifts... and none are under the tree until the kids are fast asleep. They're always so excited to see the gifts the next morning. I think Memphis was nervous he wasn't getting anything since he had received a call from Santa that he was on the naughty list... lol

So this year the kids were up just before 7:00. The hubs and I grabbed a coffee and watched them go through their stockings. They got lots of little treats like candy, hair accessories, comic books, socks & underwear, bath stuff, Pokemon cards and other goodies. I don't know how Santa manages to get all that stuff in their tiny stockings... Christmas magic, I suppose!

Both kids were really happy with what they got. Memphis got and Xbox 360 which he had been hoping for, along with some games, some Star Wars gear (hat & hoodie), a book, a new wallet and some Nerf stuff. Ruby was happy to get a new record player, a record, some dolls, Jenga, some crafty things... needless to say, they were spoiled. And very appreciative, which is always nice too!

After we opened gifts here, we puttered around & played with some of their new stuff then got ready to go to my sister's for lunch and gift exchange with my family.  Again, everyone was really spoiled!  Even me! I got some Katy Perry perfume, the Humans of New York Stories book, some leggings, earrings, a selfie stick and some Nivea face products.

The weather was amazing! The kids were able to play outside in nothing but a light jacket. No snow at all... such strange weather for Christmas, but at least it made travelling around that much easier.
After having BBQ for lunch, we headed down to the local hall to celebrate with my family on my mom's side. We're a gang of about 40+ people now (including all the kids & babies) so it just made sense to have it somewhere large enough for everyone to be comfortable.

The food was amazing, as usual. Props to my mom and aunt for preparing most of the meal! It was nice to see cousins & aunts & uncles I don't see all the time and everyone had a great time!

We got home around 8:00 that night and were all ready for bed with full bellies and great memories of the day we just had!

I've enjoyed reading everyone's holiday recaps... so nice to hear everyone had such a great Christmas this year!  Best wishes for a wonderful New Year!

Love Like Sisters

My sister and I are 7 years apart. I remember actually wishing for another brother because I wasn't happy knowing I'd eventually have to share my room if my parents came home with a baby girl.  Which they did... And the moment I saw her, I was in love.

Of course, there were times when I was a teen that she was little more than a pest, but we got through those awkward years and she is, without a doubt, the best friend I've ever had.

When I found out I was pregnant with Ruby, I had been hoping for another boy... but only because I thought it would be perfect for Memphis to have a baby brother... someone he would become best friends with like my sister & me. Of course, once the news settled in, I was thrilled to find out we were having a girl... and even more excited when a year and a half later, my sister gave birth to a daughter of her very own.

I just knew they'd be close. Considering the amount of time I spend with my sister, it would be inevitable that the girls would form a special bond too... But I had no idea just how close they would actually become.

They love like sisters and fight like sisters too.
(both are stubborn, proud and like to be right)
I don't think either of them could imagine life without the other.
Piper has a little sister of her own (and Felicity is definitely part of the gang and Ruby adores her), but I am so grateful that Ruby has Piper in her life.  As much as Ruby loves Memphis, a big brother just isn't the same.

I'm sure these 2 already share secrets, but I'm happy to know that as they get older, they will continue to confide in each other and look out for one another. Mess with one, you'll mess with the other I'm sure. I love seeing them grow up together and I look forward to seeing their relationship grow too!

Do you have someone close to you? Someone who isn't a sister, but might as well be?
