My thoughts as an autism mama...

Last month a 9 year old Ontario boy with autism was handcuffed at school, by a police officer, during a particularly violent outburst.  The family has since decided to keep little Daniel home from school until they have all the details of the incident. They are also considering legal action.

As a mother of a 9 year old autistic son this story really hit home. I actually tried to avoid it at first because my heart immediately ached for everyone involved.

There was a time I was called to the school almost daily to help my son get through an outburst.  Thankfully, I work only minutes away and the school knew I was just a phone call away.  I remember a particular incident that had me physically restraining him for more than half an hour before finally getting him into the car with the help of 2 aides.  To put this in perspective, it took 3 grown women almost an hour to get a 7 year old child into a car.  The episodes would live us all drained... physically and emotionally.

He punched & kicked holes in walls, threw chairs, ripped papers... literally tried to destroy anything and everything within arm's reach and nothing, NOTHING could calm him.

An autistic child in the middle of a violent outburst cannot be reasoned with.
(it has taken us years to finally be able to be "a step ahead" of an outburst and to know how to diffuse the situation before it gets really bad)

Do I blame the school & the police officer... no. I wasn't there, but I would hope they had tried all other interventions & procedures before handcuffing him.  I'm hoping they had nothing but his safety & well being in mind when they put those handcuffs on him.  I hope they *though* they had no other choice.  I can't imagine anyone waking up wanting their day to end like that.  However, had my child hurt himself or another person, I would be devastated.  Do I blame the parents for breaking down, being angry and wanting to know why this happened... absolutely not!!  The mother describes breaking down in tears when finding out her son had been handcuffed... I can relate. Nothing in the world can prepare you for that.  I've walked into the school to find my child being restrained by staff... it's heartbreaking.

I hope this incident has raised awareness of the importance of having school staff and law enforcement properly trained on how to deal with these special children and their extreme meltdowns.  They need the proper training and resources to ensure this never happens again!

I keep Daniel and his parents in my thoughts and I hope they get the answers they need to move forward from this.

New Hats!

A family friend is making handmade reversible bucket hats and I was quick to snatch up a few for Memphis and Ruby!  They love them!  The hats are custom made with a variety of different patterns... Ruby went for a retro look and Memphis wanted a camo one, of course!

Aren't they adorable?  The hats will go with just about anything, and I'm happy to be able to scratch that off the list of the Spring/Summer stuff I need to get!

Local readers, you can contact Wendy directly by email or phone! She makes hats for the whole family, from babies to adults and they only cost $12.50! I love the ones she made for the kids!

My Favorite Hobby

Some of you know this already, but I thought it would be fun to let a few of my newer readers know about my favorite hobby... photography!

I'm no pro, but it's a passion that has blossomed into a fulfilling and rewarding hobby. I only own one DSLR - a Canon Rebel T3 and a few nice lens. I use Lightroom 4 to edit my photos... and the rest is good timing, great subjects and a little luck!

I love being a small part in people's special days... whether it be their wedding, bringing home baby or celebrating their engagement. The fact that so many people have trusted me with these memories means so much to me.

I do blog over at Lena B Photograpy, but that is sporadic at best & the site really needs a makeover. It's easier to keep tabs on my recent shoots on my facebook page

Orange You Glad I Wrote This Post?

If you were to ask me what my favorite color was, I'd tell you it was orange without hesitation.  It's not a color I necessarily wear or decorate with often... but it's a color that I'm naturally drawn to and it makes me happy.

What does it mean that orange is my favorite color?  According to PersonalityQuiz.net:

"Orange are nature lovers. Being sports minded, they love anything to do with the outdoors. Taking long walks in the woods revives them. Trees and animals mean a lot to them and they want to be a part of nature. Good professions for Orange include farmers, ranchers, football players, and guides.
People always say good things about these down to earth people. Although they may sometimes invoke anger from others, it usually doesn't last very long. Who can remain mad at someone so helpful?
Tending to support the underdog, they will try to help someone who they feel needs assistance. Always aware of their surroundings, they tend to be more adventurous than most. Even though they are impulsive and thoughtful, they generally are very much aware of what they are doing.
Learning and remembering through experience is a strong suit of theirs. Orange believe they are meant to have all the good things in life."

Um, nope. I mean, I do enjoy the outdoors and I love animals... but I'm not overly adventurous and I'm not very impulsive. Oh well, I still ADORE the color!

all images can be found on my Pinterest board here

Seriously, can I please live here? The more time I spend on Pinterest, the more I think I really, really need to incorporate more orange into our home.  Isn't it just the funkiest color?

Wait! What? I was nominated for something?

When I received Angie's email yesterday congratulating me for being nominated for TWO Best of Blog Awards I was honestly taken aback.

Especially since I haven't been bloging regularly since... summer?  Fall brought new challenges of having to study for my agent's permit and a new school year for the kids.  Then it was the holidays, then it was trying to recuperate from the holidays...

The point being that I haven't been as present as I used to be and yet someone still thought of me when it came to nominate their favorites. Mind boggling as I had accepted the fact that my relevance in "blogland" had really taken a nosedive... and that was okay.

2015 My So-Called Chaos Best of Blog Awards

I was nominated for the Popular Parent award which really brought a smile to my face. Being a mommy is my favorite & most challenging job and for someone to recognize that really makes me feel good.  I don't blog often about my kids, but if you are friends with me on Facebook or follow me on Instagram & Twitter they're the true stars! Maybe the nomination is a sign I should bring more of them to the blog?

I was also nominated for the Fierce Fashionista award.  As a "bigger" girl on a budget, I appreciate the fact that I've inspired someone with my quirky, budget-friendly style. Even if I haven't posted an outfit since the Fall, I promise that I have been getting dressed every day!  With a small, cluttered home and below freezing, snowy weather getting a good fashion post together is nearly impossible! I'll be back in the Spring with more outfit posts, I promise!

See! I got dressed!
All this to say that it really, truly is an honor to be nominated. Thank you to whoever remembered I still existed and made the nomination. If you'd like to show your support for me, and many others, visit My So Called Chaos for the first round of voting!
