Top SIX Outfits of 2013

This year I decided I wanted more "fashion" on the blog.
I'm a just a mom with a pretty boring day job, and I can't afford the fancy clothes & accessories some of the bigger fashion bloggers can... and I'm certainly not as skinny as most.  Nonetheless, I wanted to share my personal style with my readers and I always enjoy looking back on how quickly my fashion tastes can change.  Fashion is fun, no matter what income bracket you fall into... or what size you wear.  I'm proof of that!

These are my top 6 favorite looks of 2013!
I was only going to do 5... but I thought I'd just sneak one more in there!

My favorite yellow dress, colored tights and fun shoes. My go-to look!

My favorite Modcloth "stylish surprise" yet! I scored this awesome Hellbunny dress for $15!  I wore it again a bit differently here.

A fun patterned dress and booties!
This look even inspired Angie of My So Called Chaos to draw this for me:

I adore the color & fit of this skirt.. and it's so comfortable!  I paired it with a white tank and along vest & flip flops.  Can't get much simpler than that!

Again, a fun print (it's wolves howling at the moon!) & colored tights! Love that combo! I added oversized shades and my favorite TOMS wedge booties to complete the look!  I styled it with blue tights & green shoes here!

We had a bit of heat wave in October and I think this was the last time I could wear a dress without tights.  I thought the whole look was pretty sassy!

So, I guess it's pretty obvious I like dresses. I promise I do wear pants sometimes!

#2013yearoftheselfie

Did you know that "Selfie" is the word of the year for 2013?
Well, it is.  And it's fitting since hardly a day went by that I didn't take a photo of myself.
It's almost embarrassing.  Almost.

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll see I posted a Flipagram video of my year in selfies... it's not all of them, but it's a fun way to see how much I've changed over the year!  I love watching everyone else's too!  A big thank you to Joni of Six Cherries on Top for starting the trend & the hashtag #2013yearoftheselfie.

If you have made a selfie video on Instagram, tag me in the comments there so I can check it out!!
If you decide to blog about it, leave a link to your post in the comments here!!

When we're sick, we watch documentaries

With just a few days to go until Christmas, the flu finally hit our house.  It started with Ruby on Thursday morning... and then hit Memphis & the hubby on Saturday.  Needless to say, between cleaning up *messes* and doing lots of laundry, we have been hunkered down in the living room armed with blankets, popsicles & the TV.

For some reason whenever we aren't feeling good, we like to watch documentaries.

Blackfish depicts the devastating consequences of keeping intellignent, emotional and massive creatures in captivity & for the sole purpose of human entertainment. The story follows Tilikum... and increasingly aggressive orca whale responsible for three deaths.  One of Sea World's most popular attractions, it's really hard to blame this impressive & majestic animal for his actions... especially after  watching the interviews of former Sea World trainers!!  I've never been to Sea World... and I'm no expert.  But the reality is that these creatures BELONG in the wild.  This documentary made me really angry and really sad at the same time.  It's an important movie for everyone to see!!

On a lighter note, Memphis & I watched The Short Game last night & we loved it!
The Netflix original documentary follows 9 young golfers vying for the title of "World Champion."  I know NOTHING about golf, but these kids are amazing athletes and all-around good kids.  Memphis and I were impressed with their stamina, determination, skill & good-sportsmanship.  Kids are awesome, that way.  No hard feelings.  What happens on the green, stays on the green.
When it was over, I looked over at Memphis and asked if he knew what the moral of this story was... he said:
"Never give up. And it's not about winning... it's how you play the game."
Bingo!!  Awesome movie for you to watch as a family, whether you're into golf or not!!

Passion For Fashion #34 : Frosty :

First of all, I just want to thank everyone for participating this year in Passion For Fashion!  It's a fun linky to put together, and I love all the inspiration & friends I've found through your posts!
That being said, we're going to be taking a little break for the holidays and we'll be back & ready to get back into the swing of things on Friday, January 10th!  Hope to see you all there!

In happy news, Memphis is finally home for the holidays! After 6 weeks of only seeing him on the weekends, it's so nice to know he's all ours for the next 2 weeks!  It's been a busy week anticipating his return AND getting ready for Christmas... and since Ruby decided to come down with the flu today, I didn't have the chance to take any outfit pictures...

In the spirit of the holidays, and our very frosty weather lately, I put together a fun "Frosty" inspired polyvore set!

Frosty

Happy Holidays, friends!! Be safe and enjoy yourselves!

Detachable Collar DIY

Hi friends! I'm Laura and I blog over at Vintage Requiem.  I'm really excited to be able to do a guest post here on Lena B, Actually  and I love to make things so I thought I would do a DIY.

I'm a big fan of the detachable collar and I've started making my own because it's fun and a great way to use up scrap material!  You don't even need a pattern as it is super easy to make your own. To get the scoop right on the neck line, take a piece of clothing you own and measure the point from one side of the neck to the other. Draw a line on a piece of paper.

Then draw your scoop, deciding how low you would like it to go.

This will give you an idea of how deep to make your scoop. Measure the distance between each side and then half it.

This is how deep the scoop should be at it's deepest point, which is in the middle. Take a piece of paper large enough to draw your pattern on and fold it in half.  Draw your pattern from the fold line, so that when you cut it out, it will be one pattern, jointed together at the fold.

This is the first ever collar I ever made, and I made it a little big, but I decided to use it to show you how you can easily change the size if your not happy with it.

Size 1
Size 2

To change the size, I simply folded the material in half and pinned it together  and then cut it smaller. This can be a bit risky as if you make a mistake you can't undo it. You can also make several paper collars and muck around with how they look...

Then I just pinned the material to some scrap material I had left over from a dress I made.

Then I pinned it together inside out and sewed it together.

I left a gap that I didn't sew up so that I could could pull the material through to turn it in the right way.

Turned it in the right way...

I handed stitched up the gap to finish the collar.

Now to add the ties. Make sure the ties flow with the line of the collar, this ensures that when you tie it, the bow will sit right. I hand stitched these on as well as stitching the ends of them so they wouldn't fray.

Thanks for this rockin' DIY, Laura Lee! You're the cutest... and this collar is amazing!

As much as I love blogging, with everything going on in or lives right now (see THIS post), I just do not have the time to invest in Lena B as much as I want to.  I enjoy this space so much, and I have so much respect for my readers & friends that it wouldn't feel right to completely ignore the blog right now... I will be posting as much as I can, but when I can't I have some awesome bloggers lined up to bring you some fabulous posts!  Please be nice to this rockin' ladies.  I appreciate them so much!

Old Tee DIY

This is pretty self-explanatory, and about as crafty as Lena B is about to get!
It's something I find myself doing A LOT lately.  This Walking Dead tee for example: I picked it up for $5 and it's a men's medium... I never wore it because the neck was too tight and not very flattering... I came across it when I was putting away laundry recently, grabbed my trusty scissors and created an off-the shoulder look.  Perfect for those days when I want to hang at home & be comfortable!

My only advice is to make sure your scissors are sharp and your hands are steady!

Also, I'm a readhead again! Ha!  I got really bored and decided to just go for it.  It's growing on me, but I already think I want to go darker!

I was nominated for Fave Blog by a Parent over at A Peek At Karen's World... check it out here, would love & appreciate your vote!

Passion For Fashion #33 : FEATURES!

So, can anyone else believe there are only 12 days left until Christmas?  Are you ready?!?
I'm happy to report that I am *almost* done... but it has made for a pretty hectic few weeks!

Since I have been so busy, I haven't documented any stylish outfits this week, although if you follow me on Instagram you'd get a few glimpses of what I've been wearing lately!  What this means is that I have the chance to feature of few of my favorite looks from last week's linkup.  I've narrowed it down to 3... but trust me when I say you were are totally FABULOUS!

I love the bold colors & patterns Callie put together last week!
The best is the sweater is thrifted... I love when someone can mix new pieces (like her F21 leggings) and unique, thrifty pieces!

I adore how Chioma layered her look!  And did anyone else notice her lipstick totally matched her bag!?
Genius!  Chioma is one of my favorite people to stalk follow for fashion inspiration... her look is fun, edge and always perfectly put together!

Lisa of lalafauxbois featured 2 looks last week... same leggings, same great top... 2 totally different outfits!
I'm a bit obsessed with her boots in the first photo and I love the yellow cardigan in the second.  Isn't she the cutest!?

I'm so looking forward to what everyone shares this week!

Vote for me here... I was nominated for Favorite Blog By A Parent!
