Big, Bold Prints

Dress: ModCloth // Shoes: Hautelook // Necklace: Krafty Kash // Sunnies: F21

I'm obsessed with prints.  However, the prints I usally wear are pretty subtle.  Quirky, but subtle.
But there's nothing better than a big, bold print to make you feel ready to take on the day.

Sure, a big print might seem intimidating to some, but if you keep the rest of your outfit simple, you'll see it's quite a fun way to make a statement... and an entrance.  If you want people to notice you when you walk in a room... then a dress like this one is the kind of dress you need.

Even my husband noticed that the dress had big stripes AND big flowers on it.  Yeah, pattern mixing at it's best right there on the dress.  Perfection.  Keeping with the stripe pattern of my Cannes-Do Attitude dress by ModCloth, I went with a sassy pair of striped heels.  It's a lot.  I know.  But by keeping the rest of my outfit simple, it works.  I felt powerful in this dress... Classy & in charge.

Are you brave enough to try a big print?  It doesn't have to be a dress... a bold scarf or blouse is an excellent way to test your fashion boundaries!  My advice is to go for it, though.  I promise you'll feel as wonderful as you look!

Old Sheds Make Perfect Backdrops

I could have easily titled this post "Favorites" because this is my new favorite dress, I adore the color of the tights, I'm addicted to my new TOMS, I wear these shades all.the.time and I couldn't have asked for a better place to stumble upon for pictures.

I think this must have been a one-room school house back in the day... I've visited it before, but it was more overgrown and I couldn't get in & around it as easily as I did last night... it was amazing!  It was that "golden hour" and the day had warmed up considerably.  It was perfect!

Even more amazing, the fact that the hubs got in on the fun & actually seemed to enjoy taking my outfit pics, for once.

Memphis had fun running around & exploring... it's always so nice to see him in his element.  He's so content just being near us, outside... it makes me a little sad we can't do this all day, every day.

Denim On Denim : How to rock it! :

I was not crazy about jumping on the denim on denim trend at first.  It made me really nervous.
Have you heard of the term ''Canadian Tuxedo?''
Basically it refers to an outfit that is denim on denim usually pairing jeans with a denim jacket - the biggest fashion faux pas ever,  or so I've always thought.  Plus, I'm Canadian and I didn't want to fuel the fire if my all-denim look came off looking cheap & trashy.

Truth is, denim on denim can work really well.
And this is how:

Choose pieces that compliment each other and avoid matchy-matchy denim.
I went with a chambray top & printed denim jeans.  The top was almost the exact color of the polka dot print of the pants.  My husband wasn't sure I would be able to pull off the look.  When he saw me pulling both pieces from my closet, I got the ''you're not really going to wear THAT with THAT are you?'' look.  I get that look a lot. *wink*

Mixing different fabrics, colors & textures is the best way to avoid the head-to-toe ''Canadian Tuxedo'' look.

Also, try to keep the overall look simple & sophisticated.
I layered a white cami underneath and wore simple brown booties.
I flipped up the collar of my shirt & rolled up my sleeves to be a little sassy.

Once I pulled the outfit together, I got the thumbs up approval of my husband.
I told him I knew what I was doing!

This trend can be carried over all seasons.  For warmer weather, try pairing a cute pair of colored denim shorts with a flowy tank & dark denim vest... In the winter why not try a chambray shirt tucked into a denim skirt.  Add a cute belt, maybe some funky tights and ta-da!

Of course, the best way to rock the denim-on-denim look is to be brave & confident!

Polka Dot Rockstar Jeans: Old Navy

Six Things You Know About Me... Now

Angie over at My So Called Chaos tagged me in her most recent ''get to know me better'' post.  I love doing these every now & then.  It's a great way for me to re-introduce myself to my readers.  It's the kind of post I love stumbling upon on other blogs, so here we go!

Is this how you thought your life would be.
Yes & no.  I was never one to daydream about my wedding day or a house with a white picket fence.  I knew, without a doubt, that I wanted kids.  I always assumed I would have 3.  I never imagine I'd be an ''autism mama'' though... but it's a role I am always adapting to & proud to be.  Of course, I hoped I wouldn't have to struggle financially... and even though times have been hard here & there... I wouldn't change a thing.  I have a beautiful family, a good job and cozy place to call home.  I never thought I'd be a blogger or do photography on the side either... life has a funny way of helping you become the best you that you can be.

If money were no question, I would purchase:
A home. duh.
I've actually worked really hard at paying down our debt & starting a savings account.  We're well on our way!  So, without a doubt, if I had money to buy anything right now.  I would buy the most perfect house for us.

What's your dink of choice when out with girlfriends?
Well, I rarely go out and I'm not much of a drinker, so the most honest answer I can give you is iced tea.  However, vodka & cranberry juice is my alcoholic beverage of choice.

What do you love about yourself?
I love that I am a chameleon.  Whether it be fashion or a new hairstyle, I am constantly changing my look.  I feel most comfortable not being the same all the time. I embrace my individuality and I want my kids to see a woman who isn't afraid to just be herself.

Name a good deed that went unseen.
I think I do a lot of little things for people that they might not know about.  And simple things like holding doors open, letting someone with even less items than you pass in front at the express counter.  I make little donations whenever I can. I shaved my head for charity... I do what I can.

What hobbies do you have that you don't mention here.
Well, my main hobbies are definitely photography & blogging.... hmmmm.  I did some scrapbooking for a while, but I haven't done that in ages.  Is shopping a hobby?

I'm tagging anyone who wants to join in o the fun! Be sure to let me know if you & I'll be sure to check out your post!

Couples Halloween costumes: hilarious or cringy?

Mary Poppins and Bert
With the glare of the hot summer sun finally waning, it’s time to look towards autumn and the haunting horrorfest that is Halloween. For one night only, witches, warlocks, ghosts and ghouls descend upon the world - surely it doesn't get scarier than that, right? Wrong.

There is one thing more bloodcurdling than all the living dead combined, something capable of scaring those spectres straight back to their coffins: couples in matching Halloween costumes. Halloween fancy dress is, let's face it, the best thing about the holiday. Whether you spend hours perfecting intricate makeup or just get as gleefully gruesome as possible, it's a chance to be whatever you want to be.So if what you want to be is glued to the hip of your current partner, is there a way to make it hilarious, or is cringing simply inevitable?

The best way to make matching costumes cool is by aiming for the exact opposite. Covering yourselves in head-to-toe yellow paint to play Marge and Homer Simpson makes you that awesome couple who don't care how stupid they look and are all about having a good time. Dressing up as Brangelina in Mr and Mrs Smith, on the other hand, suggests both a worrying level of narcissism and a serious lack of effort as far as costumes are concerned. Wear black tie for Halloween and you may as well hold up a giant sign reading 'couldn't be bothered.' Similarly, be careful to avoid one-sided costumes - by which we mean boyfriends nagged into dressing up as Disney Princes and girlfriends persuaded to spend hours attempting to get their hair into Princess Leia-style buns. Anything that suggests 'under the thumb' instantly marks you out as cringe, not to mention being pretty unfair for the one stuck in the stupid outfit.

If you're set on a couple's costume, just make sure the decision is as democratic as possible. At the end of the day, you can get away with almost anything as long as you both look a) like you're having fun, and b) as utterly idiotic as each other.

This post was written by Catherine Lavinia.
I've actually always wanted to try a couples costume, but I wasn't sure where to start.  There is definitely a fine line between hilarious or cringy pairings!

Have you done "matching" costumes with your significant other or friends?  What did you go as?

Passion For Fashion #21 : Guilt Free Shoes :

Dress: Maurices // Tights: F21 // Wedges: TOMS // Bag: Giant Tiger
If you haven't heard of TOMS & their One For One Movement yet, I have to ask... where have you been?  TOMS are the kind of shoe I normally hate.  The "it" shoe for awhile, it seemed like you weren't cool unless you had a pair.  And I have to admit, I wasn't a HUGE fan of the look of the classic slip on style (of which I now own 2 pairs)... but when I took a moment to really understand their mission, I realized they are guilt free shoes.

You can't NOT buy a pair.
For everyone product you purchase (shoes or eyewear), TOMS will help a person in need.
So, basically, every time you buy a pair of shoes, you're doing a good deed!  Win-win.

I picked up these wedge booties during a moment of weakness (I was having a bad day, and an email came through from TOMS about a discount & free shipping deal), but I'm so glad that I did.  I would buy a pair in every color/pattern if I could.  They are THAT comfortable.  And cute.

*all opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this post... I just really love my new booties!*

Fun fact... these photos were taken minutes before I head to the hairdressers to get my hair cut & colored...

I loved my shaved head & I'm proud of myself for doing it... but it's nice to have a style that looks like a real haircut again!  Be sure to follow me on Instagram!

Awesome Comments

Dress: Hell Bunny via ModCloth's 'Stylish Surprise' sale: $15!! // Shoes: Payless // Shades: F21 // Belt: old

I truly appreciate every comment I receive.
As a blog reader, I know that it can be time consuming to post a comment... I myself am  guilty of not commenting enough.  I read dozens of posts every day and sometimes only comment on 1 or 2... if any.  It's something I want to work on because receiving a nice comment can really turn your day around.  Really.

The other day, for example, I was having a rough time.  I've been feeling overwhelmed at work and unappreciated at home.  I feel loved, of course... and it's nothing in particular, but I've been feeling a little down.  I put a lot of pressure on myself to get.everything.done. and take.care.of.everyone. And let's face it.  I can't do it all.

Then I got this comment from Lynn over at Hearted Girl:
"hi Lena, thanks for visiting me! it's always amazing to run into fellow Canadian bloggers and your whole entire aura is like a 100watt light. i dig your about page and the refined way you break down the important aspects and loves of your life. these matching looks are super adorbs, Ruby is a total rockstar and your shirt is EPIC lades!!! fact is, your blog makes me smile and also winds up my inspiration. happy fallidays to you and yours! ♥"
Lynn is a new reader and it warmed my heart to know she had taken a few minutes of HER time to learn more about ME.  She didn't have to comment other than she liked the pics in my post... but she went on to say that my blog made her smile.  And that made me smile.

Then I thought back to the sweet comment Renae of Simple Sequins left for me last week on a different post:
"Would you believe; Target? hahahaha. That is pretty pathetic, huh? I shop at thrift shops. They aren't online. I have heard of a few online consignment places but I would rather just swap out with Plato's Closet and call it good. Great post tho. Pointed out more places I should consider. and ...smack me but I just learned you are Canadian. doh. (read your "about" page) Over the past couple of weeks I have gravitated back to your blog and I am loving it here! ♥"
Renae is always leaving me sweet comments like that... and last week, I'm pretty sure she visited every Passion For Fashion linkup & commented on their post too.  How amazing is that? Again, someone selfishly taking time to make someone else feel good.  I love it.

I want to give Jo of Will The Kids Turn Out Okay? a shout out too.  She's another woman who always has something nice to say.  When I posted last week about feeling a bit conceited when blogging about myself, she had this to say:
"Don't think you need to worry, I don't think any of your readers think you are conceited. We all just think you rock!"
 Awww, shucks.  Really?
It's so awesome to know that what we're putting out there is being received in a positive way.

So, thank you to everyone who has ever left me a sweet comment... you rock!

As of today I promise to make more of an effort to let YOU know how much I appreciate you too!
