Spray Painted Space Art

IMG_4562 (2)

Hello, my name is Joanna Marie, a 22 year old artist/crafter in the beginning stages of blogging and selling on Etsy. As a current sponsor, I've been invited to guest post on Lena B's blog, so I'd like to share a tutorial on how to create spray painted space art!

I have done about 10 of these paintings myself, and they are very fun and easy!
BE WARNED: you WILL get some paint on your fingers!
Unless you wore gloves, but of course, I didn't think of that beforehand.

Supplies Needed:
1. Glossy Poster Paper 2. Spray Paint (two colors each for the planets, as well as black, blue and white.) 3. Packaging Tape 4. Stiff Poster board, larger than the poster paper 5. Magazine pages 6. Tin Stovetop Covers or plastic tub lids 7. Paintbrush or wooden stick of some sort 8. GLOVES!

You can either watch a video tutorial I made

Or continue below and find photos and text explaining the process.

The first step, of course, is to get some shiny poster paper and mark out the size you want your finished painting to be. I did 12"x16" because it fits well on this paper and is a nice, standard size.

I ended up with about 4 extra inches on either end, so I'm cutting it down to about 1 inch. You may need to do the same. Now, take your packaging tape and secure the poster paper to the board, following the lines you made for the edge of your picture. This way, there is a nice, clean edge when you take the tape off at the end.

Here are the supplies as I'm about to use them. I am using a bridal magazine because I have 2 or 3 laying around, and I never read the pages about dishes and home decor. :-D There are 4 lids here, 2 large and 2 small, because it's nice to have different sized planets, and these sizes fit well. Usually I use tin stove covers, but I could not find mine, so I had to use ice cream and butter tub lids.

My array of spray paints.

First, you need to lay down your base planet colors. Paint a large circle where you want your large planet to go, making sure to lay the paint on thick, since you want the colors bright!

Here are my two planet base colors, red and pale blue. Let your base colors sit for 3-5 minutes to dry a bit before continuing with the planet colors. This will ensure that they are vivid and eye-catching when finished!

Now, you are going to paint a second color on top of the base, for the red planet, I chose black.

Lastly, you will spray white on top of the second color.

Now, after spraying the white on, crumple a magazine page, then uncrumple it. Lay the page on top of the wet paint, and run your fingers lightly over it.

Tear the paper off, and you are left with a nice texture for the planet!

Spray some black on the side of the planet for shading.

Place the lid/tin cover on top of the planet.

Now, repeat the same process for the second planet. Spray on second color, in my case, dark blue.

White on top of the second color.

Crumple a magazine page, lay it (uncrumpled) on top of the wet paint and run your fingers lightly over it.

Tear the page off to reveal the texture.

Spray black around the side of the planet.

Place the lid on top!

Now, begin the sky. I've done some purple as well as a strip of yellow. Make sure to spray very thoroughly around the lids, that way you will get a very sharp planet edge.

Now, add some blue for the majority of the sky.

Lastly, spray on some black, wherever it seems appropriate.

For the stars, you will need a stick, or the end of a paintbrush.
Spray some white directly onto the end.

As quickly as you can, spatter the paint from the brush/stick onto the painting. This will create tiny white droplets resembling stars.

You may need to repeat the spattering several times in order to achieve a good amount of stars.

Now, take the lids from on top of the planets, and you can see the finished painting!

And here is my finished painting!
It may take a few tries to perfect, but it is a simple project, and pretty kid-friendly! I did it with my siblings and nephew ages 6, 10 and 11, and they loved it! If you try this project, send me a pic - I'd love to see what you come up with!

Thank you so much, Joanna, for stopping by & sharing this tutorial.  Your finished piece is amazing... My husband thinks it rocks and might even attempt to do it himself!!
