A Boy & His Tablet :: autism toys ::

This year Santa had a BIG decision to make...
What do you get a very bright 7 year old who is obsessed with hunting, fishing and, well, wild animals in general.  A kid that LOVES learning.  A little boy who really knows his way around a computer...

Truth is we KNEW what we wanted to get him.
A tablet.
A place for him up upload apps & games that he would enjoy, he could Google & YouTube like he does on our computer (with our supervision)....
He's only 7.

And I swore up & down my kids wouldn't be spoiled & they certainly wouldn't play video games all day....

But Memphis is a special little boy.
He is on the autism spectrum, and although he excels academically... he's just not into super heroes & stuff like that... because it's not real.  Memphis LOVES fact & truth.

He is also a rule follower.
We knew if we set boundaries, they wouldn't be crossed.

And he's done so well with it!  He absolutely loves the Samsung Tablet we decided on.
He has uploaded all sorts of animal, zoo & hunting type games.... all very informative as well as fun! (for him anyway, I've played a few of them & they aren't my cup of tea... lol)

We do our best to set time limits... but there are times when he's been on the tablet a lot longer than he should be.  But you know what... it's a blessing.  We have a lot of stuff going on... once in a while, it's the only thing that has saved my sanity.
There.  I said it.  I'm not a perfect mother... I need a mental break once in a while, and the tablet has come in very handy for that!

Obviously, a tablet or iPad is an obvious choice for autistic children... especially those that may have communication issues... and of course, it's a perfectly fine tool/ toy for ''normal'' children & adults as well.  I just wanted to put it out there for parents that may be struggling with a new diagnosis OR struggling to come up with a fun, educational & appropriate gift for their older child who may be on the spectrum.

We are very pleased with how Memphis as responded to this gift!
Would you be interested in learning more about the things he enjoys?

If you're a parent of a special needs child, I'd love to hear what toys your kids love to play with & why!  Share a link to a post or just comment here!!

  2. Hi Lena,
I would love to read more about Memphis! I'm in a clinical psych PhD program studying ASD, so it's always cool to see kids on the spectrum making progress & what they enjoy :).

  3. Buying my son an iPad was the best decision we have made! We do have to limit his time on it, but it is amazing what he has learned from it in the few short months we've had it. I believe our sons are around the same age, mine turned 7 in January :)

  4. That is so great he is able to enjoy his toy!! I definitely think that with rules and boundaries set, then an electronic toy is okay for a child to own

  5. My son has aspergers and like your son he excels way above his classmates. We found that the Ipad really helped him nurture his interests, he even started a blog (with my help) on his interests too. Love your blog and so does my son. x
