A Birth Story 5 Years In The Making

My baby will be 5 on Sunday and I just realized, or at least I think, I've never blogged about her birth story.  You see, I wasn't actively blogging 5 years ago... but it is one of the most important days of my life and I want to share it with you today.

Decembr 2nd, 2007 was my due date.
Not surprisingly, since I was 7 days overdue with my first, I was overdue again.
And uncomfortable.

I only gained about 38lbs during my second pregnancy, but I carried very low with Ruby and had a constant pressure down there, as well as a lot of braxton hicks contractions.
I also had a 2 yr old running around and didn't have a whole lot of time to rest.
So, needless to say... I was VERY ready to have her.

I was scheduled to be induced on Sunday, December 9th at 9:00 p.m.
We had made arrangements for Memphis to go stay at my parent's place the Saturday before so we could both rest and get any last minute things ready before leaving for the hospital.

Of course, I couldn't relax or sleep.  I missed Memphis and I was also experiencing some pretty intense contractions.  They continued through the night on Saturday... nothing overly consistent, though.  They'd come on strong for awhile... then go away.
By Sunday afternoon, I had a feeling Ruby would be coming soon.  Around 3:00 p.m. I called my doctor and explained that I was already experiencing some contractions and asked if I should head over to the hospital before my scheduled induction at 9:00 p.m.  He said they were ready for me anytime, so to come on over.

I showered, shaved my legs and got as pretty as I could being 41 weeks pregnant & contracting, of course. *wink*

I got to the hospital just after 4:00 p.m. and got settled in our room.  My doctor examined me around 5:00 p.m. and I was already 3.5 cms dilated and the baby was a ''O'' station.  He promised he would be back shortly to check my progress.

After he left, the contractions came on very strong & very fast.
I started begging my husband & my sister, who was there with us, to track down my doc so he could order an epidural for me.  But my doctor didn't return until nearly 8:30 p.m.
So, no epidural for me. Looking back, it was nice not being hooked up to any machines, or poked & prodded with needles... at the time, though, I was not happy about it!
When my doctor did come back at 8:30 p.m., I had progressed to 6cms.
He decided to go ahead and break my water.
I was in a ton of pain... I was getting no relief from the contractions which were intense & right on top of each other.  He promised I'd have a baby within the hour... and he was right!

At 9:15 p.m. I screamed out that something was happening. They checked and said I was only 8 cms.
I didn't believe it.
She was coming. I told them to check again.
Sure enough I had progressed to 10cms in a matter of minutes and she was coming.

I was told to not push.
So I tried not to... I mean, I really did try eally hard, but Ruby was coming and there was no stopping her.
I didn't even have to push... it was basically 3 or 4 minutes of me trying to keep her in!  Ha!
At 9:26 p.m. on December 9th, I gave birth to a beautiful dark-haired little girl weighing 9 lbs 8oz & 21'' and we named her Ruby Ramona.

I was so in love with my baby girl... and I  couldn't believe how great I felt!!
The labor was fast & intense, but once she was out, I really couldn't complain.
I wasn't as weak or sore as I was the first time around.
Completely 100% different from Memphis' birth.
She was born at night, so we were able to get some snuggles in before settling in to a sweet sleep.

The next morning, Memphis saw his baby sister for the first time and I knew our familiy was complete.  Funny thing is I remember it like it was yesterday!
How can it be that 5 years have already come & gone?

I'm so looking forward to celebrating her 5th birthday on Sunday!
She's such a big girl now!
