for the love of... writing

Hi.  I'm Megan of Absolute Mommy.

Is it possible that we are meeting for the first time?  I've been here a lot.  I love being a guest here at Lena B.  I consider Lena one of my bloggy besties.  And she is so kind to let me camp out here on her blog every couple of months.  I feel really comfortable here, and I've shared lots of projects and recipes.

Now I love sharing "pinnable" items as much as the next blogger, but today, today I'd like to do something a little different.  Today, I'd like to introduce you to the great love of my life... Writing.

This looks like heaven to me
A few months ago, I wrote this post about being a writer.
Or as I like to say, trying to be a writer, because I feel like a fraud when I call myself a writer.  Maybe that's because I'm just self publishing my work on my own blog.  Which is silly, because self publishing is still publishing right?

Writing for me is second nature.  It's not something that I sit down at the computer and try to do.  I'm writing all the time, only usually it's in my head, and then I'm scrambling for paper and a pen.  Sometimes a crayon and the sports page, a napkin in my car, and even the back of a book in my bathroom.  I'm not kidding.  Plus I know what you're thinking, only crazies have people talking to them in their heads.  So yes I'm a little bit crazy, but from what I understand, most writers are a little crazy.

But even the most expressive gals in the blogosphere get writers block.  This happens to me more often then you would think with all the random writing on napkins.  There have been many times that I have an idea or a theme, but that's it.  There are no words to back it up, no feelings to express.  Or vise versa, there are words and feelings, but how do you get them from brain to blog?

Here are some of the things I do to get out of a blogging funk:

Free write.
Remember when you were a kid and the teacher would let you free write for five minutes?  This was like my all time favorite thing to do.  It still works today.  Sit down at your PC, laptop, notebook, whatever, and just write.  Set a timer and go.  Even better put on some music.  Whatever you do, do not edit.  Just write.  Then when the songs over or the timer buzzes, go back and read.  There will be ideas you didn't know were there, or feelings you didn't know you needed to express.  It's amazing what you can write in five minutes time.

Visit Pinterest.
I'm not kidding.  Some of my best posts come from Pinning.  Find a quote.  A picture of an outfit you'd like to try, a recipe, a DIY.  All things that make a good post.  Even when I'm at the end of my rope, Pinterest can always inspire some type of post out of me.  Then guess what happens?  The block is usually gone, and now you can go on and write about other things.  Including that hilarious meme of Sheldon Cooper.

I read all the time.  Books, magazines, blogs. I'm a mom of two, and I sometimes get caught up in books that we have Mac and Cheese for every meal.  Don't judge.  For me reading, even a magazine is a major necessity in my life and in my writing life.  Reading feeds your brain.  Fiction, non fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, whatever you like, just read.  I read two books back to back recently and I was so energized when I sat down to write.  It's amazing what a book can do for your writing inspiration.

Call my BF.
This sounds silly, but I have this thing I say all the time, "That blog just wrote itself".  This usually happens when I call my BF to tell her about something ridiculous that has just happened in my life.  I'm generally a "mom" blogger, which means I blog about my kids.  So when Mac does something like not produce a urine sample at the doctors office for 2 hours, or Caitlin has the 100th melt down about her twinkle toes, I call my BF.  And then I get super sarcastic, and make a joke about it and literally, that blog just wrote itself

So I hope I didn't bore you dear readers.  I'm so glad that you made it to the end of this lesson in bloggyland.  If you get the chance, swing by my place.  There's sarcasm, life, love, and every once in a while, tears.  Happy Blogging friends...
