50 Shades of... ho hum!?

This week I accomplished something I wasn't sure I could.
I read the first book in the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy.

I wasn't sure I would even bother... but with it being such a pop culture phenomenon right now, I had to give it a chance.  I needed to see what all the hype was about.

Now, I don't consider myself a prude, but I wasn't sure I would be comfortable with the subject matter.
I mean, I'm not much for romance novels to begin with... and from what I heard, this was a HARD CORE one.

But I borrowed it from the library and finished it in about a week {I know co-workers who read it in a day!}... I am going to be honest when I say I had a hard time relating to either of the main characters... at first.
Christian actually grew on me, but there's something about Ana that did {and still does} irk me a little.  I can't put my finger on it quite yet.  That, plus the fact that the author is VERY repetitive kinda ruined it for me and I wasn't sure I would  be able to finish it.

But I stuck with it.
And the end is that kind of ending that doesn't really end.
So, I need to {and I will} read the second book... and then the third.

Overall, is it my favorite series? Not so far.
But I'm willing to give it another chance.

I'll keep you posted on what I think of the rest of it!!

  1. TOO FUNNY! I love the "call me maybe" ecard! I read it due to all the hype and couldn't put it down because by the time it got all kinky, I was emotionally invested in what happened to the characters. I found myself intrigued by the psychology of Grey: the poor child yearning to grow into his body after suffering the childhood and past that he had. I won't say anymore because I'm not sure what took place where in the series, but I will say after finishing all three books I just felt... let down? I don't think it lived up to the hype all around it, but it was a good read and a nice break from the boredom of deployment!

  2. I honestly thought it was really "tame" compared to some of the books I've read - like Black Dagger Brotherhood and Anita Blake. I was really surprised when I finally read it and I was like..this is so not porn. LOL

I've read the second, it's a lot better than the first. Less repetitive.

  3. I agree with Sarah above- I've read the BDB and 50 Shades and I think BDB is a little more "hardcore". Might be the vampire thing?

I've read the trilogy (and reviewed it for book club) and they were good books, but not amazing. I'd rather have the BDB :)

  4. I actuallly enjoyed the books and read them quickly. Did I relate to the characters, umm no but I do believe Mr. Gray would be very umm steamy!

  5. I still can't bring myself to read the next two. Did you ever read my review? It's in my sidebar, "50 Shades of Twilight". Maybe if I read the others I'll change my mind, but I wouldn't list it as a favorite.

  6. I'm throwing a 50 shades party in a couple weeks so need to finish up the 3rd! The obsession has become ridiculous haha

  7. I'm definitely not a prude when it comes to sex in books (I love me some romance novels), but that was pretty much my feeling on it, too. I didn't really connect with Ana. But I'll read the others just to see what happens (currently on the waitlist at the library for #2).

  8. it still frightens me.. maybe its the "christian girl" in me... haha... im no stranger to the 'romance novel', but is this romance or just sex? it did make for a great pun for my new link up though =)

  9. I was the same way. It seemed like it was going to be so hard core... but overall it really isn't. It's a whole lot tamer than some make it out to be.

  10. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to handle the series but I actually really really liked it!! The next two tell more of a story :) Let us know how you like them!
