Day 2 Hair, Dry Shampoo & a Messy Bun... can I do it?

Inspired by this adorable "high messy bun" tutorial by the lovely Melissa at Pineapple Lily,
I tweeted...

and got several lovely tweets back saying I should totally go for it!  "tease, tease, tease!!"
This one from Brooke even suggests using dry shampoo and "day 2" hair...

I've NEVER done "day 2 hair"... the rare days I do go without washing it, well... it ain't pretty and I definitely do NOT leave the house, let alone rock a super cute high bun!
And dry shampoo?
I did pick up a bottle, but I'm afraid to try it!
It's just sitting in a cute little basket in my bathroom just waiting to be used!
{are there brands that are better than others? review welcomed!!}

I'm not a "hair" girl... I don't even own a straight iron
{actually, I do... it's lost in a junk drawer somewhere, I think!!}
My hair is long enough now that I really SHOULD be doing more with it...

So, I'm wondering... even with thin, super straight hair AND bangs, can I really rock day 2 hair... and will it look right in a messy high bun!?

Stay tuned...

  1. I have thin, straight hair and I rock the messy bun all the time! It's my go-to style when I don't have time to actually make it look like anything. My favorite dry shampoo is Rockaholic Dirty Secret- it is amazing! My favorite less expensive brand is Suave Dry Shampoo. My hair gets oily really quick so I always have to use a dry shampoo if I have day 2 hair. In a pinch baby powder works great too. I know it sounds crazy but it soaks the oil right up and leaves your hair smelling good too! I always have some in my travel makeup bad.

  2. I hope it works for you! I have the thickest hair on the planet so I don't know what to tell you on that. However, I can say that I love Tresseme's dry shampoo. It has a great scent and hides any grease!

  4. i actually went six months without "washing" my hair at all, and now i just wash it about once a week. once your hair gets used to not having the product in it, it's a whole different thing. either just look for a shampoo without any silicone products in it (that's what weighs it down) or you can use baking soda mixed with water to "wash" it. and for the in between times, i just rinse it in the shower. it's kind of amazing, though some people are a little freaked out about it ;)

  5. I have thin hair, and it's so hard to find things to do with it! I'm not a "hair girl" either - I use my straight iron once in a while, but usually, it's blowdry and go - either down or thrown up in a pony tail. Let me know if you ever try the dry shampoo, I have thought of getting some! But like you, I wash my hair EVERY.DAY. and just can't imagine not doing it!! haha!

  6. I have super thin and straight hair, too, and my trick is to not use conditioner. I don't really need it all the time, and it has way more body when I don't use it. The high messy bun should totally work, too, if you tease enough. I find short hair (bobs, usually) to work best for me, though.

  7. Hey Lena, I have the super thin hair too. I just posted a review about the Suave brand dry shampoo and using it for volume on Monday. It seriously works better than the pricey stuff for me.

    BTW - your post as Ruby was the best! Loved how you wrote it.

  10. Argh, never having day 2 hair! I cant understand that, well ok I probably can but I leave mine for around a week normally, but then mine is super long and used to it.

    But when I have competitions and shows I am pretty much banned from washing my hair for the week before and it can be a pain.

    Dry shampoo is amazing, personally I just use Boots own brand stuff. Iv never really been one to rock the messy bun look but we will see, if you can do it I might give myself the challenge...

  12. I have super-thin, fine hair, and I finally decided to take the plunge and try dry shampoo. It kinda works for me. My day 2 hair is a hot mess, and so in order to counteract that, I have to start using dry shampoo on day 1, like around 3. Then, the dry shampoo works for me. I hope things work out for you!

  13. I just ended up here following a link from Rachael (Imagine Gnats) & I LOVE this topic!

    I have long, THICK hair & I am LOATHE to wash it, so I just stopped. Well, not completely, but I only wash it once or twice a week now & my hair feels better for it. Like Rachael said, once your hair gets used to it...

    Now I do use shampoo & conditioner high in dimethicone because my locks are a tangly beast (it's really long); but other than the once or twice a week, it's just water, if even that!

  14. Oh my goodness, how funny! I admit, I rock my messy bun with Day 4 hair! The curly mess does better the less I wash it, believe it or not. Although, honestly, I found out skipping shampoo and just conditioning ever other day helps so much with the styling.
