How to Talk to Little Girls

Someone sent me a link to this article, after I tweeted this picture of Ruby on Twitter...

At first, I was happy to have received the link because I totally agree with the article.
{you must check it out... very interesting read!}
Our children, especially our daughters, need to know that "beauty" isn't everything.
Their mind and their hearts matter much more.

But then, I started wondering why this person singled me out as the one to send this link to...
and I have to admit, I was a bit peeved...

If you know us, you know that we are doing our best to raise our children to be confident, intelligent, thoughtful, inquisitive & unique human beings.
Of course, I think they are the cutest people I know and I love taking their pictures, and posting them on Facebook and Twitter for family & friends to see.
I'm a proud mama!
{aren't we all!?}

But I also read to them every night, encourage them to ask questions, bring them to the library, speak to them as if they are little "people," and tell them they can do anything they set their minds to.  They know to treat people with respect, embrace others individuality and love themselves, no matter what they look like!

I will tell my daughter she is beautiful.
No matter if she ends up being a size 2 or 12... if she's short or tall...
Because she is.
Even now, at the end of the day when her shaggy hair is full of knots, her face full of spaghetti sauce and her shirt covered in paint from the day's activities... I will still tell her she's beautiful.

She is also smart and really, really funny. She's a spunky little girl with a lot of energy and a wild imagination!
We make sure she knows we love everything about her.
She lights up when she figures out a puzzle on her own... or wins a round of Yahtzee... or kicks the ball further than her older brother.
We praise her for these accomplishments as well.

When she shows patience with her friends, we tell her we are proud!
When she shares her toys, or lends a hand, we tell her we are proud!

To us, she is {and will always be} our beautiful, smart, caring & hilarious... Ruby!

Let's all make sure our little ladies know exactly how special they each are!
